Distinguished Service Award to the Certification Program

The purpose of this award is to encourage, recognize, and reward outstanding contributions to the ESA Certification Program and the professionalism of entomology. The award consists of a $500 cash prize and an inscribed plaque. The plaque is presented to the awardee at the ESA Annual Meeting.

Eligibility

Nominees are required to be Board or Associate Certified Entomologists.

Deadline

Nomination packages must be received by ESA headquarters by June 1. This deadline refers to receipt by the awards administrator of a complete package in a readable format. Therefore, early submission is highly recommended. All nomination packets will not be able to be changed after June 1.

Nomination Requirements

The below materials are due at the time of nomination:

  1. Letter of Nomination including the below information:
  • Name of Nominee
  • Current position/ title of nominee
  • Brief explanation of how the nominee excelled in contributions to:
    - Professionalism
    - Science
    - The community
  • If available, information on:
    - Professional activities (consulting, research, public service, teaching/training)
    - Other information (awards, honors, achievements, mentoring, publications, professional memberships, etc.)
    - Certification activities (BCE status, leadership roles, committee activities, other)

      2. CV or resume detailing a minimum of background and related service.

      3. Information on:

  •      Professional activities (consulting, research, public service, teaching/training)
  •      Certification activities (BCE status, leadership roles, committee activities, other)
  •      Other information (awards, honors, achievements, mentoring, publications, professional memberships, etc.)

Electronic Submission Requirements

All nomination packages must be submitted electronically according to the following specifications:

File Specifications

  • Only the following file formats will be accepted: PDF, TIF graphic files, or JPG graphic files. Please make sure scanned images can be clearly read on a computer screen.
  • Font size for text may not be smaller than 10 point.
  • The nomination site requires all documents to be uploaded individually.

Judging Criteria and Notification

Nominees/candidates will be judged using the following criteria (100 points total):

  1. Professional Activities (40 points total)
    1. Consulting (10)
    2. Research (10)
    3. Public service (10)
    4. Teaching and/or training (10)
  2. Certification Activities (45 points total)
    1. Enrollment in BCE or ACE program (confirmed by ESA HQ) (12)
    2. Leadership roles held (12)
    3. Committee activities (12)
    4. Other or special assignments (9)
  3. Supporting Information (15 points total)
    1. Awards, honors, and achievements (2)
    2. Mentor to professionals (6)
    3. Professional memberships (5)
    4. Quality and number of publications (2)

Notification - 
The awards administrator will notify all candidates and their nominators with the results of their nomination approximately two months after the nomination submission deadline. 

Renomination

Any candidate nominated, but not selected, may be renominated no more than two times within the two-year period after his/her initial submission. Nomination packages will be retained for two years by the awards administrator. Nominators must send a letter of renomination to the awards administrator by the nomination deadline above. Previously submitted documentation will be used for the evaluation process unless the nominator submits new or updated documents. The renomination e-mail must contain this additional documentation. New or updated documents must follow the electronic submission requirements noted above.
