Michael Raupp, a professor, author and nationally recognized entomology expert from College Park, Md., is this year’s recipient of the International Society of Arboriculture’s (ISA) prestigious R.W. Harris Author’s Citation.
The R. W. Harris Author’s Citation is given to authors for sustained excellence in the publication of timely information related to arboriculture. ISA President Colin Bashford recognized Dr. Raupp at the ISA Annual Conference and Trade Show, August 11—15, in Portland, Ore.
“It seems there is no end to the number of arborists, tree experts and those in the general population who have benefitted from Dr. Raupp’s outreach through his teaching and research,” said ISA President Colin Bashford. “His work on managing insects and mites is a significant contribution to the arboriculture industry.”
Dr. Raupp, a professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Maryland in College Park, has written nearly 300 professional papers, journal articles, chapters and books, including his co-authoring of Managing Insects and Mites on Woody Plants. The highly influential book is a practical guide for arborists, offering them written theory and the right tools to practice managing pests. His award-winning website, Bug of the Week, is also highly acclaimed among his accomplishments as an educational author.
“My work with arborists through ISA is among the most important things I do,” replied Dr. Raupp. “I can make a real contribution writing books and publishing papers. It’s a sincere joy to have this outlet with arborists because they are often the most dedicated and progressive of environmental stewards. We share common goals—protecting trees and the natural world we live in.”
Dr. Raupp is one of nine people chosen for the 2012 ISA Awards of Distinction, sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts. Since 1963, ISA has been honoring members and industry professionals with the Awards of Distinction. The winners are selected by a diverse group of experts in arboriculture including university professors, retired arborists, owners of tree care companies, and forestry managers.
