Previously ESA managing editor, Lancette returns to lead Society's family of journals
Josh Lancette
Annapolis, MD; December 16, 2024—The Entomological Society of America welcomes Josh Lancette to its headquarters staff as the Society's new director of publications. Lancette will guide the strategy and operations of ESA's family of research journals and its quarterly magazine.
Lancette returns to the ESA staff after serving as managing editor at the Infectious Diseases Society of America since March 2022. From 2014 to 2022, Lancette worked in a series of roles with ESA publications, most recently as managing editor. His deep knowledge of scholarly publishing and the entomology community made him a top choice for the role, says Chris Stelzig, CAE, ESA executive director.
"Josh was the first person I called when this role became available," Stelzig says. "His knowledge, dedication, and collaborative mindset made him a key pillar of the success of our journals for many years, and he will be a dynamic leader for the publications, which play a foundational role in the mission of ESA and the science of entomology. I am incredibly excited to have him back here with the Society and to see where he leads our journals next."
As director of publications, Lancette will lead all aspects of ESA's scholarly journals, managing a team of two additional headquarters staff and overseeing a broad team of member editors that support the journals. The ESA journal portfolio, published in partnership with Oxford University Press, serves as a hub for entomological knowledge and showcases the broad, dynamic range of research in insect science and all its sub-specialties. Lancette will also direct the production of ESA's quarterly magazine, American Entomologist.
Lancette has spent all of his professional career in academic publishing, beginning as managing editor of the Journal of Insect Science in 2012 when it was owned and operated by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. ESA acquired the open-access journal in 2014, and Lancette quickly adapted into a broader role supporting all of ESA's journals. During his time at the Infectious Diseases Society of America, he oversaw Open Forum Infectious Diseases, a broad-based open-access journal, and led the transfer strategy for the society's portfolio of journals.
"I am thrilled to be working with entomologists and the ESA journals again," Lancette says."Science and scientific publishing are facing new pressures and challenges that entomologists are uniquely qualified to solve. I look forward to joining with the editors, reviewers, authors, and entomological community in their mission to share and promote insect science globally."
Lancette earned his bachelor's degree in English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011 and is an active member of the Society for Scholarly Publishing. He resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and will work remotely for ESA.
