Applications Open: Apply Now to be the Next Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Entomology
The Entomological Society of America is seeking candidates to serve in the position of editor-in-chief of the journal Environmental Entomology. The selected candidate’s term will begin in January 2027, although training and orientation could begin earlier.
Environmental Entomology is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes articles on the interaction of insects with the biological, chemical, and physical aspects of their environment. The journal includes sections focused on population ecology, insect-symbiont interactions, biological control, pollinator ecology and management, plant-insect interactions, and more. It has been publishing for over 50 years, receives more than 200 submissions a year, and has a team of over 40 subject editors. The journal is owned by the Entomological Society of America and is published in partnership with Oxford University Press.
Qualifications
- A comprehensive background and broad experience within areas covered by the journal’s scope.
- Experience writing, editing, and reviewing scientific research manuscripts, as well as previous journal editorial experience.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including strategic thinking, communicating a vision and expectations, and developing a strong team.
- Knowledge of scholarly publishing trends and the willingness to adapt and innovate in response to developments in the field.
- Able to collaborate with authors and the editorial team in a positive, professional, inclusive, fair, and constructive manner.
- A commitment to ESA’s mission and strategic priorities and the willingness to lead the journal in directions that support the society and the discipline.
- PhD in entomology or related discipline; professional experience at the mid-career level or higher.
Scientists of all backgrounds, identities, and geographies are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Provide scientific and strategic leadership for the journal.
- Recruit and nominate a diverse group of subject editors and senior editors.
- Uphold and communicate the vision, scope, and policies of the journal.
- Review a portion of initial submissions for quality and appropriateness to journal scope.
- Work to ensure that articles published are of the highest quality and scientific interest and that the peer review process proceeds smoothly, fairly, and efficiently.
- Act as an ambassador for the journal, including recruiting content, attending relevant conferences, and promoting the journal.
- Chair the Environmental Entomology editorial board and participate in quarterly calls.
Support, Workload, and Honorarium
The journal welcomes applications from sole applicants and from people wishing to serve as co-EICs. Joint applications should be submitted as a single application package with a single cover letter.
To keep the workload manageable for a primarily volunteer position, the appointed editor-in-chief will be asked to appoint several senior editors (who act like deputy EICs) to assist with triaging new submissions.
The anticipated workload for a sole applicant is 5-10 hours a week, moving towards the lower or higher end depending on how many senior editors are appointed. In addition to subject editors and senior editors, the EIC is supported by ESA and OUP publications staff.
This is primarily a volunteer position; however, the editor-in-chief will receive an annual honorarium of $6,000 and will be reimbursed for registration and travel to ESA’s annual meeting and other approved expenses. The appointment is for a term of four years, with an option for a second four-year term at the mutual goodwill of the editor-in-chief and ESA’s publications council. In the case of co-EICs, the editors would split the honorarium.
How to Apply
The deadline for applications is August 2, 2026. Interested candidates should send the following materials to pubs@entsoc.org: cover letter describing (1) their vision and goals for the journal and (2) their qualifications for the position as it relates to the qualifications and responsibilities listed above; curriculum vitae; and reprints of two published articles that best represent the candidate’s work. A search committee of EE subject editors and ESA publications council members will review all applications, conduct interviews, and submit a recommendation to the ESA governing board for approval. The search committee consists of Faith Oi (University of Florida), Istvan Miko (University of New Hampshire), Silvia Rondon (Oregon State University), and Greg Sword (Texas A&M University).
