ESA Statement on the Growing Threat to Scientific Progress

Annapolis, MD; February 10, 2025—At the Entomological Society of America, we have watched with growing alarm over recent weeks as actions by the federal government have threatened to severely derail scientific progress. While many outcomes remain unclear, funding freezes, travel bans, workforce reductions, data removal, shuttering of diversity programs, and abandoning international climate and health efforts all signal a difficult future for the scientific community.

As a scientific society, ESA has always supported both the advancement of science and the people who practice it, and we always will. We remain committed to advocating for insect science and the ways it improves the world, and we stand by our principles that entomology must be both welcoming and beneficial to all corners of society.

ESA leaders are actively tracking these rapid government actions and evaluating how to respond. Right now, we ask ESA members to share stories with us about how your work is affected and also to share these stories directly with your legislators. Your input will strengthen ESA's ability to urge policymakers to stand up for science and prevent a "brain drain" in federal agencies.

Please also sign up for science policy Action Alerts and check your ESA email preferences to ensure you receive ESA's monthly Science Policy News for ongoing updates and opportunities to engage.

The ESA meetings team is also working to gather and provide resources for international attendees of our 2025 Branch Meetings and Annual Meeting to prepare for travel across borders and to protect our community members' ability to gather and share their research. In all ESA events and activities, we strive to make entomology a welcoming discipline for all who work with or study insects, regardless of age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race or ethnicity, religion, disability, or other identity and demographic factors.

ESA is a nonpartisan organization, and we believe science is a universal good that all policymakers should support. We encourage the new White House Administration to work with Congress, the nonprofit community, and our partners around the world to give Americans what they want: a safer, cleaner, healthier world through scientific advancement.
