CALL FOR GRADUATE STUDENT SHOWCASE (GSS) APPLICATIONS 2018
Graduate students are invited to present their research at the 2018 Graduate Student Showcase (GSS). The GSS will be held on Sunday afternoon (11 November 2018) from 3 to 5 pm during the Joint Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America (ESA), Entomological Society of Canada (ESC) and the Entomological Society of British Columbia (ESBC) in Vancouver, BC (11-14 November 2018). The purpose of the GSS is to provide a high profile opportunity for recent graduates or graduate students near the completion of their degrees to present a more in depth overview of their thesis research.
Requirements:
- have defended or plan to defend their thesis at University in Canada or United States of America within 1 year of the meeting,
- be the principal investigator and principal author of the presented work,
- be registered for the meeting and be a member of ESA, ESC, or ESBC.
Submission packets must include the following:
1) Submit a 250 word abstract describing the proposed presentation highlighting their work,
2) Submit a 1 page (single-spaced, 12 font) outline of their research, including rationale/significance, methodology, and results to date,
3) Arrange to have the principal supervisor email a letter of support that confirms the anticipated or actual date of graduation and comments on the proposed presentation and the applicant's presentation and research abilities,
4) Include a CV that includes (but is not limited to) a list of previous conference presentations and other presentation experience.
All information must be submitted by 4 June 2018 as a single pdf document. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application. Unsuccessful applicants to the GSS will have their talks automatically moved to a Student Competition for the President's Prize, 10-min Paper. A total of five applicants will be selected to speak at the GSS, with one spot each reserved for students/recent graduates from ESA, ESC, and ESBC.

Differences between the GSS and the President's Prize (PP) Competition include:
1) The GSS is a plenary session, with no concurrent talks and before the opening plenary session
2) Presenters in the GSS are given more time to speak about their research (24 minutes total, 20 for presentation & 4 for questions) compared to the PP (10 minutes total),
3) Abstracts for talks presented in the GSS are published in the ESC Bulletin, an open access publication,
4) The selection process for the GSS is competitive (only selected students speak), compared to the PP where all students who enter speak but only one or two per category receives a prize,
5) All presenters in the GSS receive an honorarium of $200.
