Ten Entomologists Honored as Fellows of the Entomological Society of America

Daniel Whitmore Named New Editor-in-Chief of Thomas Say Publications
Annapolis, MD; July 30, 2019—Daniel Whitmore, Ph.D., Diptera curator at the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart, Germany, has been selected as the new editor-in-chief of Thomas Say Publications, a line of peer-reviewed books published by the Entomological Society of America.
Brewer, Su Join Zalom as Co-Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of Economic Entomology
Annapolis, MD; June 4, 2019—As the most-cited journal in entomology continues to grow, so too will its leadership ranks. The Entomological Society of America (ESA) welcomes Mike Brewer, Ph.D., field crops entomologist and associate professor at Texas A&M University, and Nan-Yao Su, Ph.D., distinguished professor of entomology at the University of Florida, as new co-editors-in-chief of the Journal of Economic Entomology. Brewer and Su are joining current editor-in-chief Frank Zalom, Ph.D., distinguished professor of entomology at the University of California, Davis, to form a three-person team to lead the journal.
New Coalition to Bolster Fight Against Ticks, Mosquitoes
Annapolis, MD; May 20, 2019—As the incidence of diseases transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes in the U.S. continues to rise, a coordinated and strategic response is needed now more than ever—and a diverse set of organizations is aligning to answer the call. Under the stewardship of the Entomological Society of America, 18 scientific and medical societies, professional associations, and advocacy groups have formed the Vector-Borne Disease Network, a new coalition that will stand ready to advise and support federal policymakers in confronting the challenge of diseases spread by insects and related arthropods.
Walter Leal to Deliver 2019 ESA Founders’ Memorial Lecture
Annapolis, MD; April 24, 2019—Walter Leal, Ph.D., distinguished professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis, has been chosen to deliver the Founders' Memorial Award lecture at Entomology 2019, November 17-20, in St. Louis, Missouri. The subject of Leal’s lecture will be Thomas Eisner, Ph.D. (1929-2011), commonly regarded as the “father of chemical ecology” for his discoveries elucidating chemical defenses used by insects against predators.
Poland, Keena Named New Editors-in-Chief of Environmental Entomology
Annapolis, MD; April 3, 2019—Therese Poland, Ph.D., and Melody Keena, Ph.D., research entomologists at the USDA Forest Service, will be the new co-editors-in-chief of the journal Environmental Entomology, published by the Entomological Society of America.
