Learn about Public Health Entomology Internships, Fellowships, and Research Positions

Attendees will learn about the Public Health Entomology for All internships, fellowships, and research positions for 2023 and how they can apply. Successful applicants will work at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Fort Collins, or San Juan. There will be six internships for college students, four one-year fellowships for recent graduates, and four two-year research positions for scientists who will have earned a graduate degree by June 2023. Applicants must have attended a Minority Serving Institution and be interested in public health entomology and equity.

Panelist: C. Ben Beard

Charles Benjamin (Ben) Beard is the Deputy Director of CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases. He also serves as co-chair of CDC’s Climate and Health Taskforce and is CDC’s representative to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Tick-Borne Disease Working Group. He has served outside of CDC on numerous working groups and advisory panels for the World Health Organization, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and the American Meteorological Society. He served as an editor and lead author for the USGCRP Climate Change and Human Health Group 2016 report, The Impacts of Climate Change on Human Health in the United States: A Scientific Assessment, and he is an author currently on the Human Health Chapter of the USGCRP Fifth National Climate Assessment. He is an Associate Editor for Emerging Infectious Diseases and past president of the Society for Vector Ecology. During his tenure at CDC, his work has focused on the ecology, prevention and control of vector-borne zoonotic diseases, both in domestic and global arenas, and he has published over 140 scientific papers, books, and book chapters collectively.

Panelist: Carolina Yara Cespedes

Carolina Yara Cespedes graduated from Antillean University, Mayaguez, PR majoring in Biology with a minor in Education.  Carolina was on the Dean’s list in 2021 and 2019. Carolina volunteered with the Puerto Rico Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Punta Guanajibo, Puerto Rico and was a member of the Science and Technology Club at Antillean University. Carolina interned at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Panelist: Sue Visser

Susanna N. Visser, DrPH, MS is a Health Scientist who serves as the Associate Director for Policy and Extramural Program in the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases (DVBD) for CDC’s National Center on Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. 
In her role, Dr. Visser leads DVBD’s budget initiatives, directs public and private partnership activities, coordinates and conducts partner and congressional briefings, and coordinates the execution of extramural activities. Dr. Visser led the development of a cross-Departmental national framework for vector-borne disease prevention and control to help coordinate federal efforts and bring awareness to the work that must be done to decrease vector-borne disease-related morbidity and mortality. She is currently leading the build-out of a full national strategy, built upon the National Public Health Framework.  She is the director of the Public Health Entomology for All (PHEFA) program, an internship and fellowship partnership with the Entomological Society of America. 
Dr. Visser received her Doctorate in Public Health (2014) and Master of Science in Epidemiology (2001) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She teaches Public Health Leadership as an Adjunct Assistant Professor within the Colorado School of Public Health at the University of Colorado.
