International Branch Early Career Research & Leadership Award

An award will be provided in recognition of leadership in entomology at an early career level. The award includes a $2,000 USD grant, to be used either as seed funding for research purposes or to attend a conference, and an award plaque. The awardee will be recognized at the International Branch Meeting taking place during the Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America.

Eligibility

The nominee must be a current member in good standing of the International Branch of the Entomological Society of America, and within five years of earning their last postgraduate degree or qualification (BCE, MSc, or PhD), adjusting for career interruptions due to illness or caregiving responsibilities. 


Nomination Requirements

Nomination packages should include the following: 

  • CV-Related Items: a CV (maximum of two pages) includes publications and contributions like patents in the below sections. View the full listing of what should be included in each of the following sections.
    • Section 1 - Background information
    • Section 2 - Research
    • Section 3 - teaching
    • Section 4 - Extension/Outreach
    • Section 5 - Service
  • A personal statement (two pages maximum), addressing each of the award criteria (contributions to entomology; commitment to extension or outreach; leadership efforts to increase equity and diversity in their area of research).
  • A letter of nomination from their primary supervisor (two pages maximum).
  • A letter of support from an organization or initiative with which they’ve worked within the last two years to demonstrate leadership to promote equity and diversity in their area of research (two pages maximum).

Evaluation Criteria

Nominees will be judged using the following three criteria (to of a total of 100 points):

Research and Teaching in Entomology (25 points total)

  • Quality and quantity of contributions (7)
  • Originality and creativity used to achieve the contributions (7)
  • Scope of relevance of the contributions to science and society (7)
  • Letters of support (4)

Outreach and Extension in Entomology (25 points total)

  • Quality and quantity of contributions (7)
  • Originality and creativity used to achieve the contributions (7)
  • Scope of relevance of the contributions to science and society (7)
  • Letters of support (4)

Leadership in the Scientific Community (25 points total)

  • Promoting equity and diversity in their area of research (20)
  • Letters of support (5)

Proposed use of Funding (25 points total)

  • A clear and cogent use of funds for professional development (either to pursue a new direction of research, or to support travel to an entomology conference) (20)
  • Letters of support (5)

Selection of Nominees

The International Branch Awards Committee will evaluate all eligible nominations. A recipient will be chosen based on information received in the nominations. The committee reserves the right to solicit additional information, if necessary, to make final selections. Final scores will be weighted relative to the opportunities of each candidate.


Deadline

Nominations must be received by December 13 annually at 11:59 PM EST. Nomination materials must be submitted by nominators online to the International Branch Early Career Research and Leadership Award Website.
